Nashville singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Rachel Baiman, from 10 String Symphony, returns to Australia to launch her new album, ‘Shame’, inspired by the current US political climate.
Her band will consist of George Jackson (NZ), Andrew Small (USA) & Dan Watkins (Australia), the members of contemporary Bluegrass trio, One Up Two Down. As well as accompanying Rachel, One Up Two Down will also play a set of their own material.
The musical intensity of Rachel’s new album is rooted within the current American political climate. “I wasn’t necessarily trying to write songs that would be easy to listen to,” Baiman says of the project. “I wanted to write about reality, in all of it’s terror and beauty.” From the title track about abortion politics, to love, sex, and abuse in relationships, to classism and inequality in her re-write of Andy Irvine’s working class anthem “Never Tire of the Road,” the album is ambitious in its scope, yet remains cohesive through Baiman’s personal perspective.
Musically inspired in equal parts by John Hartford and Courtney Barnett, Baiman’s influences are myriad. However, years spent playing traditional music, shine through in the album’s firmly rooted sound.
The members of One Up Two Down are all master musicians on their respective instruments. NZ born, now Nashville-based, George Jackson, is a brilliant player of both fiddle and banjo, and a winner of many awards, including the Tamworth Golden Fiddle Award, the Country Music Association of Australia Fiddle and Banjo Championships, as well as winning the Banjo Competition at the 2013 Rockygrass Festival in Colorado, USA. Andrew, from North Carolina, is a Yale School of Music masters graduate who is immersed in the American Old-time and Bluegrass music scene, while Daniel Watkins, hailing from Newcastle, is a strong vocalist and encyclopedia of songs which he masterfully flat-picks on his guitar.
George, Dan and Andrew also toured here in 2015 as members of Chris Henry & The Hardcore Grass.
